 Heirloom tomato varieties are old heritage varieties and come in many different colors, shapes and sizes.  Heirloom tomatoes are less seedy, more flavorful and colorful, and sweeter than your typical supermarket tomatoes.  Their high water content makes them a great choice for raw preparations like sliced on a sandwich or chopped in a salad.
